Know Your Gold

Gold may look the same to the eye, but what you’re buying can differ greatly depending on purity, alloy mix, and how it’s measured. At Coimbatore Jewellery, we believe you deserve to know exactly what you’re paying for — and why it matters. Here’s everything you should know before you buy your next gold piece.

What is Karat?
Karat (K) is the measurement of gold purity. Pure gold is 24 Karat, which means 99.9% gold. However, pure gold is too soft to make jewellery, so it's mixed with other metals like copper or silver to make it stronger.

- 22K = 91.6% pure gold (most common for jewellery) - 18K = 75% pure gold (used for diamond/stone jewellery) - 14K = 58.5% (mainly for lightweight fashion jewellery)
The higher the karat, the more gold it contains — but also the softer the metal.

What is BIS Hallmark?
A BIS Hallmark is a government-approved stamp of purity. It includes:

  • BIS logo
  • Karat and fineness (e.g. 22K916)
  • Assaying Centre ID
  • Jeweller’s identification
Every gold item you buy from Coimbatore Jewellery is BIS hallmarked and certified — no hidden games, no uncertainty.

Understanding Gold Rates:
Gold price changes every day based on international market trends. But there’s a difference between the **rate per gram** and the **final price**. The final price includes:

  • Gold weight × daily gold rate
  • + Making charges (labour)
  • + GST (3%)
We give you a transparent bill showing each part separately — no bundles, no confusion.

What is Wastage?
In olden days, jewellery making used to cause some loss of gold during cutting or casting — that was called "wastage." Today, it's mostly standardized and adjusted inside the making charge.

Some jewellers still use "wastage" as a trick to hike charges. We don’t believe in that. At Coimbatore Jewellery, we only charge for what’s required — and explain it clearly.

Gold Coins vs Jewellery – What’s Better?
If you’re looking to save gold as an investment, coins and bars are best — they come with almost zero making charge. Jewellery, on the other hand, adds emotional and aesthetic value.

Coins are perfect for gifts, festivals, and future conversions into jewellery. But if you want something you can wear and enjoy — go with 22K jewellery with clarity on charges and quality.

Yellow Gold vs Rose Gold vs White Gold:
These are simply colour variations made by mixing different alloys. The purity can remain the same (say 18K), but the look changes:

  • Yellow Gold: Classic, traditional, and widely preferred
  • Rose Gold: Modern look with a pinkish tone, trending in bridal sets
  • White Gold: Looks like platinum, often used for diamond jewellery
All three are real gold — just different alloys, different vibes.

At Coimbatore Jewellery, we don’t just show you the gold — we help you understand it. Because a confident customer is a happy customer. So next time you walk in, feel free to ask anything about purity, price, or policy. We’re not just here to sell, we’re here to educate — and that’s our gold standard.
